Space over Time: The Dissolution of Space into Time

Slit-scan photography dissolves space into time. It does not show the world as we are used to seeing it, but makes visible a dimension that remains hidden in conventional photography. Nothing is added, invented, or subsequently constructed. Everything that appears in the image was present in front of the camera. The very act of taking the photograph alters our perception: the photographic moment is suspended, time becomes the image-forming element, and familiar space begins to dissolve. I’m not interested in spectacular subjects. I’m not looking for extraordinary buildings, exotic animals, or faraway places. Often it’s everyday objects, shapes, structures, or color combinations that make me suspect something might be revealed through slit scanning that escapes normal vision. I paint with photography in time periods. From color, structure, movement and time emerge images of a reality that seems both familiar and strange at the same time – almost like messages from another dimension, yet entirely originating from our own world. For me, there is a special lightness to it. The fixed space loses its self-evidence, boundaries begin to flow, and for a moment a different perspective becomes possible. My work is an invitation to participate in this change of perspective: to leave behind the familiar view and to engage with a world that does not need to be reinvented, but only seen differently.

Origin and development of Space over Time

Space over Time arose from a fundamental question: What gives us support, what provides security? Many answers could be found, but they all share one thing: their transience. Space and time, on the other hand, appear to us as fixed coordinates of our perception – as constants on which we naturally rely. But what happens when these apparent constants begin to waver? When space and time elude our usual perception and become newly experienceable beyond the familiar order? Over the years, technology, visual language, and my own perspective on space and time have changed. “Tracing the Past in Space and Time” follows this development.
